For quite a while I have had AdSense as the dominant ad system running on almost all my sites. Yesterday I decided to shake things up a little bit and shuffle some things around. I found a different ad system, AdsDaq, that I haven't used before and decided to sign up and give it a try. I found they have a pretty cool alternate ad feature. Indicate the price you want for that space, if they fill it for that, great, if not, show any of a collection of alternate ads. So I created some amazon.com affiliate ads as alternates, as it would be against AdSense policy to use them in that manner.
In addition, I decided to give ShoppingAds another chance, and also used that as an alternate ad on one web site. My last test of ShoppingAds was not very well placed ads on lower traffic sites, so I thought it only fair to give it a go for a month or so on a bigger site in more prominent locations.
I have always been a fan of amazon.com's affiliate program, and have used them for years. At times they pay out well, lately they have not, but I haven't been using them as much due to my AdSense addiction of late. If you can mix it up, it stays fresh too. If visitors are always seeing the same thing, they tend to become blind to it, so seeing an ad in the same place of the site on every page isn't necessarily bad, but change that ad from format to format to keep it visually fresh.
I finally came to the conclusion that having all your eggs in a single basket is never good, and decided to shake it up a little, see how they perform. I will report back with any interesting news.
