How Much Will AdSense Make Me?

There is probably not one single question I am more tired of seeing asked in support forums and such places. Funnily enough, it happens to be a question that nobody can really answer.

Google AdWords is the advertising system that provides AdSense with the ads that it shows. AdWords sells advertisement space in an auction like system in which the highest bidder gets the ad space. The price the ad space goes for depends on what advertisers are willing to pay for any specific keywords, or space on a specific site.

As a general rule you can visit Google's external keyword analysis tool to see what keywords your pages are seen as containing, then, find out what those keywords are selling for. It's a good tool, I have found myself using it frequently in the last month or so when planning on new sites to build or researching my current web sites.

This tool can be used to find the highest paying keywords then build sites for them, or, find out the keywords your content is seen as having by Google's engine and perhaps better focus your test simply verify it is seen as you want it to be seen.

Nobody can tell you what your ads will sell for, only that you will get the highest paying ad available at the time of displaying it for your keywords. You must also be prepared for the income your web site generates to fluctuate, sometimes dramatically, from month to month as advertisers come and go, the value of keywords gain and loose popularity and your traffic goes up and down.

Perhaps the two biggest factors in your income is the traffic your web site gets, and how well placed your ads are. A good search engine optimization effort and a well optimized ad placement scheme will help you get the most possible for your site. Too many people around the internet complain that their web site doesn't make enough. The one thing most people fail to understand is that it's all an auction. It is making as much as advertisers think it's worth to advertise on in association with the amount of traffic you get, which is, in the big picture, probably one of the most accurate measures of worth there is. So if you don't think it's making enough, it's likely you are inflating it's worth in your own mind, because the market is the more accurate, unbiased judge of worth.
